With summer in full swing, it’s time to embrace those BBQ and picnic weather occasions every chance we can.  Patio furniture is certainly nice, but there’s nothing quite as quaint as sitting at a true picnic table, enjoying a meal or a late night round of cards on a summer night.

Growing up, we actually had a picnic table with the long benches in the house (it was nice, I swear!) as our main kitchen table. I have lots of happy memories of meals and board games and – of course – sitting next to someone who farted so hard I could feel it on my side of the bench (ok, fine, it was me! “Who ever felt it, dealt it” was the saying around my home). Remodeling a kitchen is a big undertaking.  A lot of things need to be considered before taking the plunge.  Frankly–a lot of fun things need to be hashed out.  For me–I would probably have to just step back, and be relegated to doing the labor.  Anything other than that–my wife would decide.  She has literally hours of experience, so it is natural she would make the remodeling decisions, right?  (Plus–she is a woman.  It is a kitchen.  I am not being sexist, I’m being a realist.  No decision of mine will last longer than 89 seconds–80 of those seconds my wife is thinking of a smart-aleck retort to my awesome suggestion).

Let’s do a list.  I love lists.  Plus–they look all organized and stuff. [click to continue…]

Gaga for the AGA Cooker

One of the most recognizable scenes in movie history is from Breakfast at Tiffany’s. In the scene, a gorgeous and sophisticated Audrey Hepburn steps out a cab. Her hair is coiffed and she’s wearing a black evening dress complete with elbow-length gloves. As she nibbles on a croissant and sips her coffee, she looks into the window of Tiffany’s. You may be surprised to know that I have a similar ritual. You won’t be surprised to know the visual is far more pathetic.

I like to get a maple dip donut and a Tim Horton’s double double and stare into the windows of the neighborhood AGA Cooker dealer (FYI: a cooker is what we North Americans refer to as a range – the AGA is decidedly British). As my coffee drips on my shirt-slash-sleepwear, I imagine one day getting an AGA Cooker for my own dream kitchen. Once the sales staff of the store is sufficiently creeped out, I make my way back to the hole I came from.

Not sure what an AGA Cooker is? Well, my friend, consider this the first day of your life. [click to continue…]

Want a new kitchen? We might have found a way (not to finance it, of course, but a way to convince Mr. or Mrs. Pursestrings it’s a must-have). In taking on a new project, I came across this old clip from 1955 called, “A Word to the Wives.” This film, sponsored by American Gas Association, National Association of Home Builders, The Woman’s Home Companion and Old Timey Gender Roles, is about a pair of women who plot to convince a husband that a new kitchen is needed ASAP. It’s also a nice look at some of the conveniences we take for granted and other kitchen gizmos that have gone the way of the dinosaur (automatic flour dispenser? Gas garbage disposal? Housewife?): [click to continue…]
