We’re taking a quick break from our regularly scheduled HomeFixated program today. As you surely know, Japan experienced one hell of an earthquake recently – one that triggered a devastating tsunami that all but wiped out the northeast area of the country. The words “wiped out” don’t convey how badly this force of nature has destroyed the area: at the time of writing this post, an estimated 12,000 people are dead or missing (a number that keeps rising) and 430,000 people are homeless. Every once in awhile, something comes to my attention that doesn’t benefit me directly. So, every once in awhile I feel it’s worthwhile to give a bit of a shout-out to people doing good things. Such is the case with a local non-profit that is in my area. Home Resource is something that I didn’t discover until I had been building in the Missoula area for a couple of years. I simply hadn’t heard of anything like it–and it seems like a pretty good idea. [click to continue…]
It’s no secret that us folks at HomeFixated are fans of the charity, Habitat for Humanity. This organization brings together volunteers, tradesmen and businesses to build homes for people who have had the carpet pulled out from under them (figuratively and literally). Those who get the homes also work right along side the volunteers to build it, so each home is an incredibly personal project for all involved. [click to continue…]
Today is Monday, October 5 – a day the UN has designated as World Habitat Day.
Here’s the dealio (from Habitat for Humanity):
On this day, we reaffirm that adequate shelter is a basic human right, and we focus on the housing conditions of cities and towns around the world. We also use this day to remind the world of its collective responsibility for the future of the human habitat.
On October 5, 2009, please join us in support of World Habitat Day, as we raise our voices and declare that the lack of decent, affordable housing is unacceptable.
At HomeFixated.com, we love to talk about ways to improve our living spaces, ideas for taking rooms “from hideous to prettious” and the tools that help make it happen.
