Dremel Saw in ActionThis month’s tool du jour is the Dremel Saw-Max. To me, simply hearing the name Dremel  conjures up visions of engraving or die grinding, but the Saw-Max is something different. While it is still in the diminutive tool division, it can step up to the plate in situations where you don’t really need that circular saw overkill. I mean, you can use a four inch brush to paint base shoe, but seriously, if you don’t have to, why would you? Finally, we have a small but strong saw to do the work where circular saws are too big.  [click to continue…]

I try to stay away from “specialty” tools that are really only useful for one purpose.   For one thing–I am not a drywaller.  I am a carpenter.  Owning the Roto-Zip was a bit of frivolity that while I do not regret–I am not sure I needed.  Ah well.  Another tool for me to have.  Adding to the armory is never a bad thing, and Roto-Zip tells me why I need this tool–which is all fine and great, but I’m here to cut through the sales writing, and just tell you what I think. We recently published some table saw safety tips in the hope it might help you keep your finger tips.  But what do you do after you accidentally cut off your fingers?  Why, sue of course!  A recent article by Jenn Abelson from the Boston Globe tells us that “Carlos Osorio accused One World Technologies Inc., maker of Ryobi saws, of negligence for failing to include a flesh detection technology that would prevent most serious injuries, according to a copy of the complaint filed in 2006 in US District Court in Boston.” And believe it or not, Carlos won the case, to the tune of $1.5 million, even though they were asking for only $250,000. After lawyer & legal fees, I’m estimating Carlos himself will probably net about $7 for his troubles.  But it may be for a very good cause, improved table saw safety, industry-wide.   [click to continue…]

spear_jackson_laser_guided_sawI’ve never claimed to be much of a woodworker – I tend to stick to the most simple of tasks. Even then, there’s no guarantee of success. Making a straight cut with a hand saw can even be an achievement. My failure rate is usually attributed to two things: One, being distracted by the TV during mid-saw stroke (who among us has not been drawn into the deep conversations held by the characters on The Hills?), and two, I sometimes inadvertently tilt the angle mid-project.

While it can’t really help me with my first issue, Spear & Jackson’s Laser Guided Saw can ensure you’re on track at any point in the project. [click to continue…]

Freud_BladeThe name “Freud” means different things to different people:

  • - Those with even a slight introduction to psychology will think of all sorts theories that supposedly explain our behavior (most of which apparently have to do with how badly our parents inadvertently screwed us up).
  • - Those with even a slight introduction to table, circular and miter saws will think about one of the best brands of blades available to them. Freud saw blades are some of the top-rated among wood and laminate choppers according to woodworkers, handymen, carpenters and DIY home improvers.
  • Let’s focus on the latter, shall we? [click to continue…]
