Anyone who knows me knows that I don’t like cats. Of all the creatures in the animal kingdom, I think cats are the top jerks – and, yes, I did consider the raccoon, the hyena and ALF, and cats still won the title.
Much of my proof lies in how they treat the surroundings around them. Despite being waited on hand and foot, getting to live in comfy homes rent-free and not having a care in the world, cats spend their leisure time destroying your furniture, floors, walls and door posts. I know a lot of people who are freaked out by the horror movie, The Ring. Me, I’m not into scary films. I’ve never quite understood why some people find being in a state of anxiety is a form of entertainment (same reason why I never cared for ER either). Anyway, the rings that really bug me are the ones left behind from glasses on wood furniture.
The horror! Like Larry David said in a recent episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm, I have to ask people who do this, “Do you respect wood?”
If you recently had someone in your home who does not respect wood, I have a simple way to remove water ring stains from wood tables. Scratch happens. That’s the motto around here. It took me a decent while to be ok with that motto, though. When we first got our hardwood floors and our one-step-up-from-Ikea furniture, I treated them with such loving tenderness you would have thought they were made of newborn kittens.
So when the inevitable happened – a horrible, unnecessary scratch – I was a bit … disappointed. [Edit by Jen’s Husband: Disappointed? Try “a raving, crazy lady.”] Ahem. Eventually, one has to accept that what’s done is done and how to proceed from there.
