DeWalt Cordless Grease Gun

What's This? This post is sponsored by The Home Depot. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure is an adage that could very well be attributed to the creator of the first grease gun. The DeWalt 20-Volt Max Cordless Grease Gun, referred to as the DeWalt Cordless Grease Gun for this review, is a powerful ‘ounce of prevention’ for all of your greasing needs – and there are plenty of greasing needs here in the 21st Century. From now blowers, lawn tractors, golf carts, ATVs, and motorcycles; today’s DIY-er and mechanical pro needs to make sure that they are maintaining and greasing their equipment.

The DeWalt Cordless Grease Gun for All Occasions

There are often a wide variety of tools to fit your need but the the DeWalt Cordless Grease Gun fits the bill of the DIY-er as well as the professional with its functionality and price point. You could spend anywhere from $65 to $95 on lever grip and pistol style manual grease gun. For a nominal amount more, $169 Tool Only, you can have the the DeWalt Cordless Grease Gun that delivers 10,000 max psi to clogged fittings. It can be filled using standard grease tubes, attached to a 50 gallon drum of grease or you can load the cartridge from a container of grease.

Today’s Needs for the DeWalt Cordless Grease Gun

While there may be fewer grease fittings than there were 40 years ago, there is a surprisingly large number still in use that are in desperate need of grease. Your snow blower, small lawn tractor and ATV all likely have grease fittings (also referred to as Zerk or Grease Zerk fittings). Motorcycles have grease fittings on or around the swing arm, axle hubs, steering, and neck assembly. If you are into cars – muscle, classic or antique – the components are not sealed the way some modern vehicle components are. From control arms, suspension, external door hinges, . . .an original Model A has over 60 rather important grease fittings. You can tell by the ride when they are filled and in good working order and the DeWalt Cordless Grease Gun is the perfect tool for the job.

This Grease or Zerk Fitting is easily overlooked and ignored for the life of the snowblower. It is begging to be fed.

DeWalt Cordless Grease Gun is Professional Grade

The DeWalt Cordless Grease Gun is built for heavy duty use with fittings that allow it to be filled from a 50 gallon drum or large container of grease quickly and easily. If you have larger pieces of equipment like a bobcat, larger tractor or bulldozer, the DeWalt Cordless Grease Gun will help you to maintain the machinery and extend the life while minimizing the down time.

The black knob is a pressure release valve while the other two fittings aid in filling from a larger container.

My friend, Jimmy, who has several large machines shared “This tool would be ideal for some of the fittings that have hardened or the grease has hardened. It’s a two man job because the fluid pressure from the pumping of the old style blows the connection apart. So typically, one person holds the fitting on and the other pumps the grease gun. Otherwise, you have to prop it somehow and awkwardly hold it on while pumping the cartridge.” Jimmy has a D3 Case bulldozer, a 920 Cat Loader and a 5055E John Deere. But even on their ‘little tractor,’ a 3033R John Deere, there are over 20 grease fittings. The DeWalt Cordless Grease Gun with its adjustable tip, variable speed trigger and powerful motor pushing 10,000 psi turns this two person job into a smooth one person job.

The LED light has an on/off switch like a flashlight. Unlike other tools that only light when the trigger is pulled – this helps in those dark crevices of our equipment!

This convenient hose clip keeps the line in place when you aren’t using it. The cap on the tip keeps the grease where you want it.

This screen acts as a filter to keep contaminants out of the line and equipment. There is an access to clean out on the side of the DeWalt Cordless Grease Gun as well.

Here’s a Tip – this Tip is Adjustable

Something that is not explicitly spelled out in the owner’s manual for the DeWalt Cordless Grease Gun is the adjustable tip. In fact, I needed the wisdom of Pops (who is in his 70s) and the aid of two wrenches in order to adjust the tip – after I accidentally pulled a grease fitting out of the snow blower with the DeWalt Cordless Grease Gun. Some grease fittings are basically pushed into thinner gauge metal and can be pulled straight out with the force of the tip of this tool. You want to open it up so that it snaps on with a click but not so tightly that you are fighting to remove it.

Here we are adjusting the tip – notice the grease fitting that is still in the DeWalt Cordless Grease Gun instead of the snow blower. Whoops.

There is too much of a good thing and too much grease for a fitting. The DeWalt Cordless Grease Gun will push out the grease with up to 10,000 max psi as long as you keep pulling that trigger. Again, adjusting the tool to be snug and get the grease into the fitting but let a little come out when full is key.

DeWalt Cordless Grease Gun
It takes a couple of tries to dial in the tip and trigger on the DeWalt Cordless Grease Gun. Taking the time to clean this off well will help avoid hardened build up around the fitting.
DeWalt Cordless Grease Gun
It is a tool and will do what you ask it to. When you keep pulling the trigger, it will keep pumping out grease. A quick wipe, replace the cap and it is ready to be stored neatly away.

The Slippery Slope of Studying Grease

I opted to buy one or two tubes of grease, rather than the 50 gallon drum, and found several different types in brand, rating and vehicle brand. I can assure you that I discovered and learned far more about grease than what is included here but would like to pass along a couple of general guidelines.

DeWalt Cordless Grease Gun
You definitely want to refer to your manual or do a little research before buying the first or cheapest tube of grease for the DeWalt Cordless Grease Gun.

Greases are rated by the National Lubricating Greases Institute, or NLGI. Institute ratings range from NLGI-000 through NLGI-6. NLGI-2 is the most commonly called for grease. You should always refer to your owner’s manual for the recommended grease type. Type LB is used for chassis grease used on tie-rod ends, ball joints, u-joints and control-arm shafts. While type GC is the recommended greases for axle and wheel bearings. But there is also the option of using greases rated GC-LB for both types of lubrication.

Doesn’t this just remind you of a yummy container of pudding? Unlike pudding, this grease is essential to the health of our equipment!

Within wheel-bearing greases, some manufacturers have their own specifications. I found tubes of Chevy, Ford, and all-purpose at my local automotive parts store. This spawned my research into different greases, their ratings, and applications.

DeWalt Cordless Grease Gun vs. Sentimentality

Maybe part of your inheritance was your grandfather’s hand pump grease gun and you have no intention of being the one to break from tradition. Or if you can count the number of grease fittings on one hand, the DeWalt Cordless Grease Gun may be more than what you need. Outside of those scenarios, the DeWalt Cordless Grease Gun has the functionality and power that can provide as many ounces of prevention as your equipment needs. It is a smooth operator for the DIY-er with lots of mechanical projects, or the professional.
