Blog Find: The Expanding Round Table Project

With (American) Thanksgiving around the corner, it’s safe to say that the holidays are on the verge of kicking off. That means an increase in family dinners, potlucks, and parties. Around my neck of the woods, we call this Elasticized Pant Season.

With lots of food and lots of people, some people find they run out of room pretty quickly while entertaining. We found a project online that shows how one man solved this problem (and may inspire you to do the same!) – but you definitely have to be a skilled woodworker to tackle it.

Rick Christopherson had a vision, the skills, the tools and the drive to create a unique (and gorgeous) round table that could expand with arrow-like leaves. It’s entirely unlike most (rectangular) expanding tables, as this round style design is infinitely more complex (it also might better suit some rooms!). This style is commonly referred to as a Jupe Table and was more popular in the 1800s, but you can order custom and antique versions now and again.

However, if you’re a woodworker and a Rockler addict, you may be tempted to create this for yourself – or at least watch how one was created. Christopherson’s blog doesn’t include plans, but it does detail all the steps he took, including the little snags and victories along the way.

If you want to be inspired in creating a beautiful family-friendly table for the season (ok, maybe next season), check out the Expanding Round Table Blog.

About Jen

Jen (but never “Jenn”) Byck, aka the Fix'n Vixen, is a Toronto-based freelance writer and communication consultant who is undoubtedly home fixated (she is also TV fixated, really bad TV fixated and donut fixated). Her approach to home improvement has been rather trial and error, the latter of which is evidenced by the amount of spackle she buys on an annual basis.
