Happy Thanksgiving

Today is that special day we American’s like to call Thanksgiving. It’s a day marked by thorough and methodical groping of your body by TSA officials, traffic jams, awkward/drunken moments with extended family, the slaughter of millions of birds, and eventually. . . . food coma. After that, you can look forward to jostling about shopping malls like herded cattle, followed by more traffic jams/groping at the airport on the way home. A couple weeks later an impressive credit card bill serves as a memento of it all. Now, who’s ready to party?!

Actually, Thanksgiving is theoretically about being thankful for what we have. Being a reader of HomeFixated, there’s a good chance you’re a homeowner or a renter. Either way, that puts you in an elite category relative to the rest of the world, and even here at home. This Thanksgiving I’m grateful to have a roof over our head (even though we just found a leak in it), and a heater that works (even though we spent $400 having a faulty circuit board replaced). Just having a comfortable and safe place to call home is a privilege, and one we don’t take for granted.

So wherever you are this Thanksgiving, don’t forget to take a moment and reflect on at least a few things your thankful for, whether it’s food, family, shelter, friends, or just the shirt on your back. Oh, and HomeFixated officially grants you permission to take the day off from any home repairs or improvements. Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

About Marc Lyman

Marc grew up under a brave single mom who "encouraged" home improvement on the family home. Early toddler gifts included a tool set, and even a cordless Bosch drill when cordless drills first came out. In grade school (give or take a few years), Marc's mom said, "We need to cut down some trees. . . . here's a chainsaw." A father figure also involved Marc in many home improvement projects, including a summer of home remodeling in Palo Alto, CA. Toss in some Obsessive Compulsive personality traits researching everything home improvement related. The end result: a genetically pre-disposed, socially sculpted home improvement machine!
