OMG – Two New OMTs!

For my money, the oscillating multitool, or OMT, is one of the most useful tools on the planet. I use mine on almost every job, for everything from trimming shims, notching the bottom of jambs for flooring, trimming pipes, removing grout, cutting holes in drywall for device boxes, and on and on.

With the right blade, an OMT can cut wood, metal or plastic, and the small size makes it easy to always have along. Milwaukee has had cordless OMTs available for years, but they’re adding two new models – an M12 and an M18. And they’re both FUEL versions.

Getting gritty with the Milwaukee M12 FUEL OMT

First up is the Milwaukee M12 FUEL OMT. Milwaukee says the M12 FUEL OMT delivers the fastest cut speed and lowest full-tool vibration on a 12V platform. Slide in an M12 XC 4.0 battery, and the tool can make up to 54 1”x2” cuts in oak, and up to 65 1”x2” cuts in pine. Other premium features include tool-free blade changes, a 12-setting speed dial to match the tool’s speed to your application, and a bright and shiny LED light. Here’s the full list of features and specs from Milwaukee:

M12 FUEL Oscillating Multi-Tool (2526-21XC):

• Oscillation Angle: 3.9 Degrees
• OPM Highest Setting: 20,000 OPM
• OPM Lowest Setting: 10,000 OPM
• Variable Speed Dial
• Tool-Free Blade Change
• Length: 11.2” (tool-only)
• Weight: 3.2 lbs. w/battery
• 3-year warranty

The Milwaukee M12 FUEL Multi Tool will be available in September 2020 as a bare tool (2526-20) or in a kit with the M12 FUEL™ Oscillating Multi-Tool, an M12™ REDLITHIUM XC4.0 Battery, M12 Charger, (1) Universal Fit OPEN-LOK Oscillating Multi-Tool Wood Blade, (1) Multi-Tool Sanding Pad, (1) 60 Grit Sand Paper, (1) 80 Grit Sand Paper, (2) 120 Grit Sand Paper, (1) 240 Grit Sand Paper, and a Lunchbox Carrying Bag.

The M12 OMT kit. It’s also available as a bare tool.

Now on to the M12’s big brother: the Milwaukee M18 FUEL OMT. With its aggressive oscillation angle of 4.2 degrees and speeds of up to 20,000 OPM, the new tool claims the title of fastest cut speed in the industry. Milwaukee says the tool has the power to perform tasks as demanding as making rip cuts through hardwoods and nail-embedded wood. As with the M12 version, Milwaukee has designed the tool to keep overall tool vibration to a minimum.

The Milwaukee M18 FUEL OMT raises the bar for OMTs – cordless or corded!

But wait – there’s more! Along with its ten speed settings, the Milwaukee M18 FUEL OMT has an Auto-Load feature, that adapts the tool’s cutting speed to your application. A 180 degree LED light illuminates the fine work you’re doing, and with the ability to run on any M18 battery, pick a big honker, and you can get an entire day’s work done on a single charge. Here’s the spec list:

• OPM Highest Setting: 20,000 OPM
• OPM Lowest Setting: 10,000 OPM
• Oscillation Angle: 4.2 Degrees
• Auto-Load Feature
• 180-Degree LED Light
• Variable Speed Dial
• Length: 12.2”
• Height: 3.9”
• Weight: 4.2 lbs. w/battery
• 3-year warranty on battery
• 5-year warranty on tool

The M18 FUEL Oscillating Multi-Tool will be available in November 2020 as a bare tool (2836-20), or in a kit that includes the M18 FUEL Oscillating Multi-Tool, an M18 REDLITHIUM XC5.0 Battery, an M18 & M12 Multi-Voltage Charger, (1) Universal Fit OPEN-LOK Oscillating Multi-Tool Wood Blade, (1) Multi-Tool Sanding Pad, (1) 60 Grit Sand Paper, (1) 80 Grit Sand Paper, (2) 120 Grit Sand Paper, and (1) 240 Grit Sand Paper.

Let’s Make Some Tiny Holes!

Next in our rundown of Milwaukee PIPELINE Episode One is another of my favorite specialty tools: a 23-gauge pin nailer. I’ve used a pneumatic pinner for years, and I love the surprising gripping power you get from a tiny little nail. The beauty of the 23-gauge pinner is the almost unnoticeable hole it leaves behind. This makes it a favor of finish carpenters, woodworkers, cabinet makers, and hobbyists.

milwaukee pipeline episode one
The Milwaukee M12 23-ga. pinner is going to make a LOT of people happy…

Now Milwaukee has made this sweet tool even sweeter, with the introduction of the Milwaukee M12 23GA Pin Nailer. With no hose to drag along, this lightweight little nailer is extremely easy to maneuver into tight spaces. The M12 23 GA pinner uses a nitrogen air spring mechanism to consistently set pins to the right depth in both hard and soft woods.

Milwaukee PIPELINE Episode One
The Milwaukee M12 23-GA Pin Nailer

A non-marring precision point tip makes for accurate pin placement. Other features include dry-fire lockout to prevent misfires and damage to your workpiece, and a double-action trigger. The Milwaukee M12 23GA pinner drives 23-gauge headless pins from ½” to 1-3/8” in length. You’ll be able to buy it as a bare tool (2540-20) or in a kit (2540-21), and you should be able to start free-range pinning in the first quarter of 2021.

Time To Ratchet Up The Hatchet

We have a lot of trees on our property, and it seems like there are always several that need a bit of a trim. I have chainsaws, but most of them aren’t very light, and are often tough to maneuver in a tangle of branches. A Sawzall can often do the trick, but if there are a lot of thicker branches to attack, that’s usually not the fastest plan of attack. Now there’s a new blade in town; it’s 6” long, weighs less than 5 lbs., and it’s a FUEL tool that doesn’t need a drop of gas! Meet the Milwaukee M12 FUEL Hatchet 6” Pruning Saw.

milwaukee pipeline episode one
The Milwaukee M12 FUEL Hatchet – now THAT’S a pruning saw!

Using Milwaukee’s Powerstate brushless motor, the Hatchet has the power to make cuts in hardwood up to 3” thick. With an M12 XC 4.0 Ah battery, the saw has enough run time to complete up to 120 cuts in 2” oak. The Redlink Plus electronics provide the Hatchet with instant throttle response, and the variable speed trigger offers excellent control while making your cuts. Here’s the spec list from Milwaukee:

• 6” Oregon® Bar & Chain
• Full House Chain
• Speed: 5 m/s
• Chain Gauge: .043”
• Chain Pitch: 3/8” Low Profile
• Oiler: Automatic

The Milwaukee M12 FUEL HATCHET 6” Pruning Saw will be available this month (August 2020) as a bare tool (2527-20), and in a kit (2527-21) that includes the Hatchet 6” Pruning Saw, an M12 REDLITHIUM XC4.0 Battery, M12 Charger, 6” Oregon® bar and chain, Scabbard, and Scrench.

Milwaukee PIPELINE Episode One
The M12 FUEL Hatchet kit.

Oregon, one of the best-known names in chainsaw technology, provides the bar and chain for the Milwaukee M12 Hatchet. A “full house” design is used for the chain, including a cutter on every drive link on the chain, instead of every other drive link. This technique delivers cleaner cuts and reduces vibration. Additional features include automatic chain oiling, an easy access chain tensioner, metal bucking spikes, and onboard storage for the scrench.

For The Wrecker, You AXed For It…

While the M12 FUEL Hatchet is an excellent solution for trimming branches, sometimes you have to get to the root of things. Burying a spinning chainsaw blade (or even a NON-spinning chainsaw blade) in the dirt is not generally recommended in the owner’s manual. Not to worry, though; Milwaukee has an app for that. Or, actually, an AX.

You probably don’t want to go after roots with your chain saw…

Milwaukee has had a line of tough carbide-tooth blades for years for cutting both wood and metal. More options are always good, though, and in September of 2020, Milwaukee is adding to the fun with new Carbide Teeth Pruning Blades, Multi-Material blades, and more sizes of their TORCH and TORCH with NITRUS blades. Here’s the scoop from Milwaukee:

The AX™ with Carbide Teeth for Pruning & Clean Wood Blades

Built to deliver the fastest cuts above and below ground, the AX™ with Carbide Teeth SAWZALL® Blades for Pruning & Clean Wood are constructed with a 3TPI design for the fastest cutting in clean wood.

Featuring a low blade profile for root removal and an optimized carbide grade, these blades allow users to complete even the toughest root ball cuts and stump removals while withstanding impacts with harsh abrasives such as gravel, sand, and dirt. These blades deliver up to 50X more life in comparison to the carbon steel reciprocating saw blades available today.

Get A Handle On D-Handle

The next things to spurt out of the Milwaukee PIPELINE Episode One are three tools designed to have a big impact on your work. We’ll start with the big gun: The Milwaukee M18 FUEL 1” D-Handle Standard Anvil HTIW (High Torque Impact Wrench), the world’s first cordless wrench of this size.

milwaukee pipeline episode one
If the D-Handle wrench doesn’t get it loose, it’s probably not coming off…

Need to bust a nut? This big boy has 2,000 ft-lbs. of nut-busting torque! Time to tighten it back up? You’ll have 1,900 ft-lbs. of fastening torque to play with. Pretty incredible power out of an 18V tool! Here’s the complete spec list:

• Anvil Type: 1” Friction Ring w/ Thru Hole
• Fastening Torque: 1,900 ft-lbs
• Nut-Busting Torque: 2,000 ft-lbs
• DRIVE CONTROL™: 4-Mode Customizable
• 360° Tool-Free Adjustable Handle
• RPM: 0 – 1,200
• IPM: 0 – 1,440
• ONE-KEY™ Enabled: Yes
• Tool Length (w/ battery): 17.94”
• Tool Weight (w/ battery): 24.4 lbs
• Warranty: 2 Years

Like all M18 FUEL products, the new Milwaukee M18 FUEL 1” D-Handle Standard Anvil HTIW makes use of the RED trifecta: REDLINK PLUS intelligence, an M18 REDLITHIUM battery, and a POWERSTATE brushless motor. These three components work together to protect the tool and battery against overloads, overdischarge and overheating. They also optimize the life of the battery pack, and the amount of work that can be done per charge. Using an M18 High Output HD 12.0 Ah battery, the D-handle wrench has enough run time to install up to 200 1-1/4” bolts.

A four-mode drive control makes it easy for users to switch between modes, to get just the right power and speed for the application. As an added benefit, Milwaukee’s ONE-KEY system is incorporated into the tool. This allows users to customize, manage and track the wrench, and to choose among four fully customizable modes to easily dial in the perfect combination of speed, power and torque for frequently-used applications.

As an added sneak peek, Milwaukee will soon offer an M18 FUEL 1” D-Handle Extended Anvil HTIW w/ ONE-KEY for applications that need more reach. A special lug-nut mode that can be enabled through the ONE-KEY app will be included. The lug-nut mode will automatically shut off the tool within the targeted torque range of 350-450 lbs., to prevent over-torquing. The extended anvil version should be available in October 2020.

The Milwaukee M18 FUEL 1” D-Handle Standard Anvil HTIW with ONE-KEY will be available this month (August 2020) as a bare tool (2868-20), and in a kit (2868-22HD) that includes the D-Handle wrench, (2) M18™ REDLITHIUM HIGH OUTPUT HD12.0 Battery Packs, M18 & M12 Rapid Charger, Tool Free Adjustable Handle, Lanyard Loop, and Contractor Bag.

Take The Torque Down A Notch

Not everybody works on big construction equipment, and 2,000 ft-lbs. of torque might be overkill to loosen up those rusted bolts on that old Honda Civic. You still need a wrench with some oomph, though, and three years ago Milwaukee came out with a mid-torque impact wrench. It fills in the size and power gap between compact impact wrenches and the big guns like the 1” D-Handle wrench.

Now they’ve updated that mid-torque wrench, and while they significantly decreased the length on the new Milwaukee M18 FUEL Mid-Torque Impact Wrench, they also increased the torque. Milwaukee says the ½”-drive version’s 650 ft-lbs. of nut-busting torque should enable most users to handle over 90% of their daily applications without needing to grab the high-torque impact wrench.

milwaukee pipeline episode one
The M18 FUEL mid-torque impact wrench is no slouch, either…

The smaller size of the Milwaukee M18 FUEL Mid-Torque impact wrenches lets them get access to stubborn fasteners the bigger wrenches can’t get at. Despite being the most compact tools in their class, the mid-torque wrenches still have the power needed to bust loose large bolts or lug nuts.

Power tools aren’t generally known for their intelligence, but these are the smartest impact wrenches I’ve ever seen. All of the Milwaukee M18 FUEL mid-torque impacts are equipped with a four-mode DRIVE CONTROL. A single button on the tool lets you select from among a range of pre-set RPM and IPM levels.

For example, selecting Mode 4 while in forward kicks in AUTO SHUT-OFF, which prevents overtightening by applying no more than 35 ft-lbs. of torque. When the tool is in reverse, Mode 4 activates Bolt Removal control. This provides full torque output, then slows the speed once the bolt is loosened to prevent dropping fasteners. Not that THAT ever happens!

The Milwaukee M18 FUEL mid-torque impact wrench.

Milwaukee M18 FUEL Mid-Torque impact wrenches come in several flavors. You can choose a 3/8” friction ring, a ½” friction ring, or a ½” pin detent version. All models should be available in November 2020. Here are all the specs from Milwaukee:

Thank You Sir, May I Have Another? The Gen 3 Compact Impact Wrench

For those really tight spaces where even the mid-torque wrenches can’t squeeze in, Milwaukee has managed to make their smallest impact wrench even more compact. The Gen 3 Milwaukee M18 FUEL Compact Impact Wrenches are only 4.8” long – a full inch shorter than the previous version. And once again, they managed to increase power while reducing size; the new version brings up to 250 ft-lbs. of nut-busting torque to the game.

The M18 FUEL Compact Impact Wrench – small but mighty.

Smaller doesn’t mean dumber. The M18 FUEL compact impact is equipped with the same four-mode DRIVE CONTROL as its mid-torque big brother. AUTO SHUT-OFF applies no more than 20 ft-lbs. of torque in forward, to prevent overtightening. Bolt Removal control works the same as on the bigger wrench, applying full torque until the fastener is loose, then slowing down.

On the off chance your work area isn’t brilliantly lit, three LEDs help chase away the shadows. Milwaukee M18 FUEL Compact Impact Wrenches are available in 3/8” and ½” drive versions, and should be available in November 2020. Here are the full specs from Milwaukee:

Plumbing The Depths Of The Milwaukee PIPELINE Episode One

Is your business going down the drain? Milwaukee has an easier way for you to accomplish it. The new Milwaukee M18 FUEL Sectional Machine for 5/8” and 7/8” cable is VERY portable, and Milwaukee claims it’s the most powerful sectional machine for 1-1/4” to 6” drain lines. Milwaukee says the powerful brushless motor has more power than corded machines, and can clear heavy roots up to 150’ out!

milwaukee pipeline episode one
The M18 Sectional Machine is easy to lug around, and has plenty of power.

The Milwaukee M18 FUEL Sectional Machine is the lightest and most compact in its class, making it easy to schlep around. You can even add straps, leaving your hands free to carry cable and other tools. When equipped with an M18 High Output HD 12.0 Ah battery, the machine will get you through multiple jobs on a single charge. Launch date for the sectional machine is November 2020, product numbers are 2818A-21, 2818B-21, and 2818-21.

Drum Roll, Please…

For those cleanout problems where the Milwaukee M18 FUEL Sectional Machine doesn’t have the reach or capacity, roll out the Milwaukee MX FUEL Sewer Drum Machine. Weighing in at a svelte 119 lbs., vs. the often 200-lb. weight of a corded drum machine, the MX FUEL unit is also equipped with POWERTREDZ Lift Assist technology. POWERTREDZ makes it easier for one person to get the big machine in and out of vehicles, and up and down stairs.

For the big jobs, it’s time to bring the big drum.

Once the Milwaukee MX FUEL Sewer Drum Machine is in place, it’s ready to get to work, without the hassle – and hazards – of using an extension cord. And it has plenty of power; the machine can clear roots up to 200’ out, in 3” – 8” sewer lateral lines.

Tired of having to manually pull back heavy cable through the pipes? The CABLE DRIVE Automatic Feed and Retract feature does the job for you. There’s a RAPID STOP button to quickly release the drive bearings, to keep the cable from binding. To keep you looking good and smelling sweet, the drum is fully enclosed, to contain any goop that comes back with the cable. The Milwaukee MX FUEL Sewer Drum Machine is available now, and so are these specs from Milwaukee:

Bringing The Power: The Milwaukee MX FUEL Carry-On 3600W/1800W Power Supply

Next up is an item that a lot of users are eager to get their hands on: A compact power supply with no fumes. Putting out 3,600 peak watts and 1,800 continuous watts of pure sine inverter energy, the Milwaukee MX FUEL Carry-On Power Supply can power anything from 15A corded tools to sensitive electronics.

The Milwaukee MX FUEL Carry-On Power Supply…

The Milwaukee Milwaukee MX FUEL Carry-On Power Supply is very compact, and its lack of noise and emissions make it ideal for use in confined spaces. The Carry-On power supply (MXF041-1XC) should be available in early 2021.

The M18 FUEL Compact Vac is easy to use close in…
Or in the upright and locked position.

The future’s so bright, I gotta wear shades…

Four multidirectional light heads allow users to light up multiple areas at the same time. Milwaukee’s TRUEVIEW High Definition output provides an accurate look at whatever you’re working on.

The MX FUEL Tower Light, ready to launch…

Not content with being the brightest bulb on the site, the Milwaukee MX FUEL Tower Light/Charger is also the toughest. About Phil

Phil’s path to the pinnacle of success as HomeFixated’s Senior Writer was long and twisted. At various stages of his life, he worked as a framing carpenter, attended motorcycle mechanics school, served as an Army MP, did a hot and itchy stint installing insulation in Phoenix, owned and operated a small contracting firm doing residential renovations, and worked as an employee of a major airline (Motto: We’re not happy ‘til YOU’RE not happy). He is currently semi-retired, but continues to take on little projects, such as the total renovation of an old farmhouse. Yes, he is a slow learner. Future projects include a teardown restoration of his 1965 BMW motorcycle, and designing and building a kick-ass playhouse for his grandsons. Phil loves spending time outdoors, hanging out with family and friends, cool tools, and a cold IPA when beer o'clock rolls around.
