Sears Goes Zombie – Happy Halloween

Our intrepid author-extraordinaire Jen spotted this alternate reality Sears site, and it’s just too fun not pass along. And just in time for Halloween. I’m actually really pleased to see a company like Sears think outside the box/outside the coffin when it comes to their marketing. It seems several larger companies we might not think of as cutting edge are realizing being lighthearted and poking a little fun at yourself can bring a lot of attention with it. Toyota’s Swagger Wagon video on YouTube is a case in point. So what exactly is the Sears zombie site, and where can you find it?

The Sears zombie site is chock full of material that you’d expect to find on the normal Sears site, but all with a zombie twist. Their social shopper tool gives a thumbs up to brains and a thumbs down to chainsaws. It also allows you to select your brain preference; “Chilled, Runny, Boiled or A La Mode.” There’s a subtle language preference link that lets you toggle between English and Zombian.

They even posted a zombie fitness video:

And this video, and another video.

Why in the world would Sears invest so much time and resources into creating a spoof zombie site? They know that bloggers are drawn to zombie content like a moth to a flame, that’s why. Here we are, totally playing into their devlish (zombie-ish?) plan for free publicity. You can even follow along with their zombie tweets @zombieshopper, where you’ll be treated to lines like “Must clear up confusion. Boiled brains are my favorite” and “Trend alert: ripped clothes are going to be BIG this season.” We’d like to personally congratulate whoever came up with this ingenious marketing ploy, but, we don’t want our brains eaten.

So come see the zombie side of Sears.

About Marc Lyman

Marc grew up under a brave single mom who "encouraged" home improvement on the family home. Early toddler gifts included a tool set, and even a cordless Bosch drill when cordless drills first came out. In grade school (give or take a few years), Marc's mom said, "We need to cut down some trees. . . . here's a chainsaw." A father figure also involved Marc in many home improvement projects, including a summer of home remodeling in Palo Alto, CA. Toss in some Obsessive Compulsive personality traits researching everything home improvement related. The end result: a genetically pre-disposed, socially sculpted home improvement machine!
