Here’s a Tip – this Tip is Adjustable
Something that is not explicitly spelled out in the owner’s manual for the DeWalt Cordless Grease Gun is the adjustable tip. In fact, I needed the wisdom of Pops (who is in his 70s) and the aid of two wrenches in order to adjust the tip – after I accidentally pulled a grease fitting out of the snow blower with the DeWalt Cordless Grease Gun. Some grease fittings are basically pushed into thinner gauge metal and can be pulled straight out with the force of the tip of this tool. You want to open it up so that it snaps on with a click but not so tightly that you are fighting to remove it.
There is too much of a good thing and too much grease for a fitting. The DeWalt Cordless Grease Gun will push out the grease with up to 10,000 max psi as long as you keep pulling that trigger. Again, adjusting the tool to be snug and get the grease into the fitting but let a little come out when full is key.
The Slippery Slope of Studying Grease
I opted to buy one or two tubes of grease, rather than the 50 gallon drum, and found several different types in brand, rating and vehicle brand. I can assure you that I discovered and learned far more about grease than what is included here but would like to pass along a couple of general guidelines.
Greases are rated by the National Lubricating Greases Institute, or NLGI. Institute ratings range from NLGI-000 through NLGI-6. NLGI-2 is the most commonly called for grease. You should always refer to your owner’s manual for the recommended grease type. Type LB is used for chassis grease used on tie-rod ends, ball joints, u-joints and control-arm shafts. While type GC is the recommended greases for axle and wheel bearings. But there is also the option of using greases rated GC-LB for both types of lubrication.
Within wheel-bearing greases, some manufacturers have their own specifications. I found tubes of Chevy, Ford, and all-purpose at my local automotive parts store. This spawned my research into different greases, their ratings, and applications.
