How to Build a Mailbox Column – Bat-Proof Your Mail Delivery

There are two kinds of mailboxes in this world. There’s the kind that gets knocked off its post every few years by a bored teenager with a baseball bat, and there’s the kind that will still be standing when the house falls down around it.

This is the story of building the second kind. Specifically, a mailbox column built out of concrete block, rebar, grout and stucco, with a heavy locking mailbox buried in the middle of it. Longtime Home Fixated readers might recall we redid our front entry walkway in Arto Spanish tile, which left us with two pending entry columns flanking the walkway. By “entry columns” I mean two concrete footings, patiently waiting for the column build. One of those columns was about to get a job.

Why Build a Mailbox Column Instead of Buying a Post?

The short answer is I over-engineer just about everything. The longer answer is that a standard mailbox on a wooden post has exactly two enemies, and both win eventually. The first is time, which turns the post into a leaning, gray, splintery apology over about a decade. The second is people, which is the polite way of saying mail theft and the great American tradition of the drive-by mailbox smashing.

A mailbox column solves both. Mail drops through a chute into a locked aluminum box that you can only open from behind. And the whole assembly is grouted, reinforced concrete block, which means a kid leaning out of a moving Civic with a Louisville Slugger is going to have a considerably worse night than the mailbox does.

Speaking of which, HomeFixated’s legal team asked us to point out that this particular prank is a federal crime. Not a “your parents will be disappointed in you” crime. An actual one, under 18 U.S. Code § 1705:

“Whoever willfully or maliciously injures, tears down or destroys any letter box or other receptacle intended or used for the receipt or delivery of mail on any mail route… shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than three years, or both.”

Three years. For a mailbox. Anyway, ours is now made of concrete. We might be saving some teen substantial jail time with this project.

The Mailbox – QualArc Liberty Through-Wall Locking Mailbox

The unit we used is the QualArc Liberty Through-Wall Locking Mailbox, model LIB-BL-LM6-46, which is the black finish with the 4″ to 6″ adjustable chute. QualArc also offers it in bronze, silver and antique copper, and with an 8″ to 10″ chute if your wall is thicker.

Even when we bought it at pre-Covid prices, it was expensive. But for something going into a concrete vault, I wanted to err on the side of longevity. And, you know, my over-engineering tendency.

What you see happening in the image above is not just an unboxing ceremony. Chuck was mocking up the planned column dimensions and calculating measurements to make sure this would all come together as planned. Concrete is not very forgiving.

This may be obvious, but here’s how the Liberty column mailbox works. A conventional letter plate sits on the street side of the column. Mail goes in through the flap, travels down an adjustable chute that spans the thickness of the wall / column, drops into a collection box buried inside the column, and stays there until you unlock the rear door and take it out. There is no reaching in from the front (unless they have spindly-thin, bendy alien arms). There is no prying the thing off a post. There is no baseball bat.

The adjustable chute is the detail that makes this work in masonry. It telescopes to match your wall thickness, so the letter plate lands flush on the outside assuming your column isn’t crazy-level thick.

The 9″ x 2.5″ slot decides what fits without a bonus trip to the post office, and the 7″ x 7.5″ rear door determines how comfortably you can get a fistful of mail back out. The rear access door sometimes feels a bit small, but mostly when I’ve neglected to bring in the mail for a week or two. Or, one day, during election season.

Note also that QualArc specifies the chute be set in place with masonry and silicone adhesive, which is not included and which you want on hand before the mason is standing there holding a mailbox.

Before You Dig – Three Phone Calls

I know. Nobody wants the section of the article that involves planning, phone calls, and possibly communication with your local municipality. Since skipping any of the tasks below can genuinely ruin your month, they are worth mentioning.

  • 811, at least two working days out. California requires everyone to call before digging, homeowners very much included, and there’s no depth below which it stops applying. Here in San Diego that’s DigAlert. A footing hole is not crazy deep, but neither is the average gas or water line. We almost managed to pierce our neighbor’s water line, which we discovered runs right along the sidewalk edge in front of our property.
  • Your local post office. USPS is surprisingly hands-off about national specs for a custom built-in box and surprisingly insistent that you clear it locally. Their own guidance says to “show your local postmaster your mailbox plans or your custom-made box for approval.” Do that before you build a concrete thing you can’t move. Once we built ours, our friendly USPS delivery person updated the delivery location associated with our address.
  • Your building department. A freestanding masonry column with a heavy cap on top is a small structure, and depending on height and location, it may need a permit. If you have the fortune/misfortune of being governed by an HOA, it’s probably going to need HOA approval (you don’t want Gladys or Phillip from across the street narcing on you. It’s a five minute call (or 2 hour call???) that beats a correction notice.

For the record, USPS wants curbside boxes 41″ to 45″ from the road surface to the point of mail entry, set back 6″ to 8″ from the face of the curb. If your carrier walks up instead of driving by, the relevant line is that the carrier has to be able to reach it easily from your sidewalk, steps or porch. That sounds obvious right up until you build a beautiful column your mail carrier has to climb a planter to reach. These spec’s could change, so please verify with USPS before relying on any sketchy numbers from us.

What You’ll Need

  • The mailbox. QualArc Liberty Through-Wall Locking Mailbox, or an equivalent through-wall box with a rear access door. Buy it before you lay block, because the block gets laid around it.
  • Concrete block (CMU), sized to your column, with the cells stacked to align.
  • Rebar for the footing and the vertical bars running up through the cells.
  • Rebar safety caps. Cheap. Non-negotiable. More on this below.
  • Mortar for the bed joints and grout for the cells. These are not the same thing and swapping them is a mistake.
  • Stucco scratch, brown and finish coat, plus a concrete bonding agent.
  • A cast stone cap. Ours is an Arto pier cap, matched to the Arto tile on the walkway.
  • Levels, a tape, a trowel, a hawk, a mason’s line, and a mixing tub or mixer.
  • PPE: nitrile or butyl gloves, eye protection, waterproof boots, and a respirator plus water or dust collection if you’re cutting block.

One more line item, and it’s a vital one: a mason. Chuck Lockett and his assistant did the masonry on this project, and watching them work is what convinced me that laying block plumb, level and square is a skill and not something I could likely nail accurately on the first try. I can lay block. I cannot lay block that looks like Chuck laid it. But, if you tackle this on your own, more power to you, and let us know how it turns out!

Step 1 – Footing and Rebar

Everything above ground is only as good as the concrete below it. The footing gets poured first, and while it’s still wet, vertical rebar get set into it in the positions where they’ll line up with the block cells above.

That rebar is the whole point. It runs from inside the footing up into the sides of the column, and once those cells are filled with grout (more concrete), the footing, the steel and the block stop being three things and start being one thing. That’s the difference between a column and a very tall stack of blocks.

Safety Note: Cap every piece of vertical rebar the moment it’s standing, and leave the caps on until the column is grouted. OSHA’s rule for job sites (29 CFR 1926.701(b)) is that “all protruding reinforcing steel, onto and into which employees could fall, shall be guarded to eliminate the hazard of impalement.” OSHA’s guidance for those covers is that they should withstand 250 pounds dropped from ten feet. A tennis ball is not that. Actual rebar caps cost a few bucks for a bag. Cheap insurance against eye injuries / impalent, neither of which sound like part of a successful home project.

Footing depth and rebar size are the two things we’re not going to hand you a number for. Exterior footings generally need to bear below undisturbed ground, and California sits in a high seismic design category with its own minimum reinforcement rules for masonry. Either parts of the country have this thing called freezing weather. What that translates to for your specific column, in your specific soil, at your specific height, is a question for your mason, building department, and/or a local engineer.

Step 2 – Stack It Up and Leave a Hole

With the footing cured, the block goes up course by course, each one buttered, set, tapped down and checked for plumb and level in both directions. Chuck chalk-marked the block faces so the same units went back in the same spots, which looks fussy until you see how tight the finished joints are.

The important part happens at mailbox height. Instead of a solid course, you cut and fit block around a rough opening sized to the masonry box.

Dry fit the mailbox into that opening before you commit. You want it sitting where the letter plate will land flush with the finished stucco, not the bare block, and stucco is not thin. Measure it now or chip it out later.

Step 3 – The Mailbox That Tried to Escape

Once the mailbox was seated in its opening, the next move was packing concrete around the sides to lock it in. Reasonable. Straightforward. And about thirty seconds into it, the mailbox started to float.

In hindsight, it’s obvious. I should have been leveraging my high school physics class sooner. Wet concrete is a dense fluid, considerably denser than a hollow steel box full of air. Physics does not care that you’re building a mailbox. The same buoyancy that has been known to lift an empty pool shell out of the ground was cheerfully trying to lift our mailbox out of the column.

The fix was low-tech and effective. We placed a first lift of concrete around the box, then physically weighted it in position while that lift started to set. Once it had grabbed, it held the box down against the rest of the pour, and we filled in around it. This issue is trickier than it seems, especially when you’re working with a batch of wet concrete. Plan for this so you don’t have a mailbox permanently cemented an inch and a half above where it belongs. Place the concrete in lifts instead of one shot, and check it stayed put before every additional lift.

Step 4 – Grout the Cells

Mortar goes in the joints between blocks. Grout goes in the cells, and it’s a different animal on purpose. Per the Concrete Masonry & Hardscapes Association, grout is a mix of cement, aggregate, and “enough water to cause the mixture to flow readily and without segregation into cores or cavities in the masonry.” Spec grout slump is 8 to 11 inches, which is soupy by design.

It has to be soupy. Stiff mortar shoved into a cell leaves voids around the rebar, and a void around rebar is a place where the steel isn’t actually bonded to anything. The grout’s job is to completely encase the bar so the steel and the block work as one system.

A Word or Two About Silica Dust and Wet Cement

This section gets the jokes turned off, because these two are the parts of masonry work that actually hurt people.

Silica dust. Cutting or drilling concrete block releases respirable crystalline silica, and it does permanent damage to lungs. OSHA’s construction standard (29 CFR 1926.1153) sets a permissible exposure limit of 50 micrograms per cubic meter as an 8 hour time weighted average, and its Table 1 controls are straightforward: use a water-fed blade on a masonry saw, or a shroud with dust collection running to a HEPA vacuum on a handheld drill. Pros are legally required to comply. DIYers should do the same thing because your lungs don’t check your employment status. We’ve covered this before in our cordless cut-off saw review, where wet cutting was the whole point.

Wet cement. This one surprises people. OSHA puts it plainly: “Wet portland cement can damage the skin because it is caustic, abrasive, and absorbs moisture.” And the line that should stick with you: “Employees cannot rely on pain or discomfort to alert them to cement burns because cement burns may not cause immediate pain or discomfort.” Third degree chemical burns happen to people who knelt in wet concrete and didn’t notice for hours.

Specific PPE, not generic PPE. OSHA calls for nitrile or butyl gloves rather than cotton or leather, since cotton and leather soak the stuff up and hold it against your skin. Waterproof boots tall enough that concrete can’t get in over the top, with your pants outside the boots, not tucked in. Eye protection. And if you do get wet cement on skin, wash it off with water immediately rather than waiting to see whether it bothers you.

Also worth noting: drilling dowel holes into a cured footing means a rotary hammer, which means picking between SDS Plus and SDS Max and dealing with the dust that comes out of the hole. OK, we’re done channeling our inner-OSHA inspector.

Step 5 – Refining the Slot

With the column grouted and cured, the mailbox opening got patched and refined so the letter plate would sit dead flat against the finished surface. This is fussy, unglamorous work and it’s the difference between a mailbox that looks built-in and one that looks stuck on.

Step 6 – Stucco, and the Return of the Hairdryer

Before the finish went on, a bonding agent was brushed over the patched areas so the new coat would actually grab the cured surface underneath instead of sitting on top of it waiting to fail. Bonding agent needs to be dry before the next coat, and standing around watching a wall dry is nobody’s idea of billable time.

Enter the hairdryer.

Yes, that is a household hairdryer being used as a masonry tool. And yes, this is the second time a hairdryer has earned tool status on this site, after we used one to thaw a frozen drain tube in our Samsung refrigerator. At this rate we’re going to have to add a Hairdryer tool category. I’d apologize, but it worked both times and HomeFixated is often about improvising what you have on-hand to get the job done.

One thing worth knowing if you’re doing your own stucco: don’t rush the coats. Fresh stucco has a pH above 11 and needs to come down before it will properly accept what goes on top of it, which is why moist curing between coats matters and why finish coats want a real cure window before anything else goes over them. Misting a couple of times a day for two or three days after each coat is the standard approach.

Step 7 – Crowning It With Arto

The cap is an Arto cast stone pier cap, ordered alongside the Artillo tile we used on the walkway so the color and texture would carry through the whole entry. It’s a detail that helps make the columns look designed instead of tacked on.

It is also absurdly heavy. This is not a cap you set by yourself, and it’s not a cap you set by yourself twice, because the second attempt will involve your back.

Safety Note: Team lift the cap, every time. Plan the whole move before you pick it up, keep your fingers clear of the underside and the pinch points where it lands. Don’t do this in your flip-flops. There’s no clever technique here, just a heavy object and gravity, which is undefeated.

Give the mortar and grout real time to cure before you load a cap this heavy on top. Masons generally want several days, and concrete is conventionally benchmarked at 28 days for full design strength. There’s no upside to rushing it.

Several Years In – What We’d Change

This column has now been standing through several years of San Diego weather, which I realize is the softest test conditions in America. In our defense, it also survived a few of the downpours that occasionally convince this city it’s on the verge of becoming Atlantis.

The mailbox has been nearly flawless. No rust, no sag, no finish failure, no wobble in the letter plate, no trouble with the lock. The build quality is the thing you notice every single day: the plate is solid aluminum, the flap has real weight to it, and the whole assembly feels like a piece of hardware rather than a flimsy piece of sheet metal.

My favorite small detail is one I didn’t notice until after installation. The flap has an integrated rubber strip along its edge, so it closes with a soft thump instead of the metallic clack you’d expect from a steel flap dropping onto a steel frame. It’s quieter, and it’s not beating itself up a few times a day for years on end. Somebody thought about that.

My one critique – the access door on the back is hinged at the top. That means retrieving mail involves holding the flap up with one hand while fishing around with the other, which is exactly as awkward as it sounds. Hinging it at the side or the bottom would make access far easier.

That said, I suspect the top hinge is deliberate. A top-hinged flap sheds water by default, and gravity keeps it closed against wind-driven rain. USPS specifies top hinges for horizontal mail slots for the same reason. So my complaint is probably the cost of the weatherproofing that’s kept the inside of this thing dry for years. I’ll take the trade, I’d just like it noted for the record.

Building a Mailbox Column – A Final Word

If you’re already building entry columns, putting the mailbox inside one is moderate effort and enormous in payoff. You get a locking box that can’t be pried, tipped, or batted, a letter plate that reads as architecture instead of hardware, and a mailbox you will hopefully never think about again.

If you’re starting from scratch purely to solve a mailbox problem, be honest with yourself about the budget. A footing, block, rebar, grout, stucco, a cast stone cap and a four-figure mailbox add up fast. A good locking post-mount box solves 80% of the problem for 20% of the money. Column Mailbox Cost and Where to Buy

The QualArc Liberty runs a hefty $1,279.99 to $1,294.99 direct from QualArc depending on finish and chute length, as of August 2026, with the letter plate included. Amazon pricing moves around, so check both. That is real money for a mailbox, and it ballooned the hardware budget for this project. The block, rebar, mortar, grout and stucco are comparatively cheap. The mason’s time is the other significant number, and it’s the one I’d least want to cut.

Is a four-figure mailbox rational? On its own, no. As part of an entry you’re already building, mounted in a column that isn’t going anywhere, protecting mail that increasingly includes things people would like to steal, it starts to look a lot more sensible. Or, if you’re someone like me who doesn’t like regret and finds perverse joy in over-engineering, it’s money well spent.
