Some Comic Relief: The Money Pit

The year is 1986. Tom Hanks had curly hair. Shelley Long was … known. Together, they starred in a movie that encapsulated everyone’s nightmare of home renovations: The Money Pit.

I actually think Shelley Long is incredibly underrated. Sure, she’s goofy, but she’s adorable goofy. Like Long, this movie is dismissed a little too quickly. It features a yuppie couple who find a dream home outside the city that needs ‘a touch of work’ and inevitably take on more than they can chew. Yes – there are hijinks-a-plenty and lots of physical gags, but anyone in the midst of their own personal home improvement nightmare will smile and nod along. There’s something priceless in knowing that you are not alone and that it could, indeed, be worse.

So dig out the popcorn maker, push the tool box off the couch, snuggle up to your exceptionally patient spouse and check out The Money Pit. They say that laughter is the best medicine, after all.

About Jen

Jen (but never “Jenn”) Byck, aka the Fix'n Vixen, is a Toronto-based freelance writer and communication consultant who is undoubtedly home fixated (she is also TV fixated, really bad TV fixated and donut fixated). Her approach to home improvement has been rather trial and error, the latter of which is evidenced by the amount of spackle she buys on an annual basis.
