DIY: How To Create Your Own Invisible Shelf

We recently profiled a neat design – the Umbra Conceal Bookshelf. It received a few comments, so we went searching for similar ideas HomeFixaters might like.

That led us to this clip on Video Jug about how to DIY an Invisible Shelf that looked simple enough. Despite being hosted on Video “Jug”, I assure you the video is G-rated. You just need an L bracket, a utility knife, a drill, a screwdriver, small and large wood screws, a tape measure, glue and a large sacrificial hardcover book.

Not only is the video easy to follow – it stars Aragorn! I think the highlight is after they describe how to carefully find a stud, Aragorn is shown screwing the bracket into the wall, clearly having missed the stud. Oh well, I’ll pretend we didn’t notice the screw freely spinning away in the drywall. invisible_shelf_DIY

The hardest thing about this project is figuring out what book to use – it’s got to be something you’re ok with wrecking (the work of Ann Coulter comes to mind), while also being something you’d be proud to display (so not the work of Ann Coulter). We’ll leave that decision up to you.

  1. These invisible shelves would be really cute in a nursery or child’s room. Find old children’s books in thrift stores to use as the shelf. You can then use the shelf to hold a picture, stuffed animal or other decor item that goes along with the room theme!
